Tutorial: Using web surveys as a means to introduce discussion topics--This activity can be either a traditional or an online classroom activity.

Here are few possibilities...

Option 1:

  1. Locate a few online and print resources. Note that some online resources, e.g., LA Times, charge for articles over 14 days old. However, some institution's also have subscription services so that this is not a problem.
  2. Construct a list of questions for your online survey
  3. Post the survey to a webserver with your webmaster's support. The webmaster may have to construct the survey using the survey software which may take a few days.
  4. Give the students the web address for the survey and have them vote online.
  5. Present the results to the students.

Option 2:

  1. Begin discussion of topic in classrooom.
  2. After students are divided into small groups, have them develop a series of questions for the survey.
  3. Post the questions for the survey on the web site with your webmaster's support. The webmaster may have to construct the survey using the survey software which may take a few days. .
  4. Have the students vote.
  5. Present the results to the students.

Activity:

  1. Go to the web survey example surveys listed above. Complete each of the surveys to get a sense of the tool's capabilities.
  2. Construct your survey on a vendor's free survey site, e.g., Zoomerang, or purchase web survey software, e.g., Waves-in Motion, and have your institution install the software on the institution's web server.
  3. Construct your survey using the online survey tool and with the webmaster's help.
  4. Have students complete the survey online.
  5. Present the results to the students.
